He rose, but before he turned toward the kitchen, he faced Brian and leaned forward, kissed his cheek swiftly and softly. He intended to step away, but Brian caught first one of his hands, and then the other, and held them both in one hand.

“Jackie, thank you for that. But what I’d like even more is if you were to kiss me—” Brian lifted the index finger of his free hand and touched his own lips. “—just here. Will you?”

They broke the kiss together, but as it ended, Brian sucked and then nipped at Jackie’s bottom lip.

Brian smiled, and after he let go of Jackie’s hand, stroked once over Jackie’s shoulder and arm—a comforting touch, Jackie thought. “Thank you, Jackie,” Brian said, his eyes sparking with something like mischief. “That was lovely.”

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty-two years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young people and their relationships, and she believes that physical intimacy has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

1 - Which of your characters gets the most attention? The one who is the loudest or the one who is next on your to do list?

If you are asking about which character gets the most mental attention from me in my daily thoughts and daydreams, it is not the loudest character, but the sweetest and most sensitive. The characters who feed my imagination the most, and then I, of course, feed them back, are the sweet, tortured guys who just want to fall and love and live happily ever after, but so much prevents them from getting that done.

2 - Which of your characters has gone off in directions you didn’t expect?

When I wrote The Red Sheet from the perspective of Bryan, I told myself I was going to let myself go totally as an author and that I was not going to be restricted by the usual rules that authors are supposed to follow. I said to myself, “If Bryan thinks it, and Mia likes it, then I’m gonna write it.” And Bryan was quite a character, with quite unruly thoughts. He even took me to the scene of a flash mob in his high school cafeteria, where he danced! I honestly never knew what Bryan was going to do next. He once even jumped off a high stone wall to see if he could fly!

3 - Do you have a daily word count you expect to reach?

I definitely do not have a daily word count. In fact, I just write in spurts and pay no attention to word count, whatsoever. If the book is long, it’s long, and if it is short, so be it.

4 - What is your least favorite part about writing?

Waiting for the very first reviews is hard because if feels like I am waiting for a verdict to come in on my hard work. And I’m sensitive so I take it all to heart.

NATE'S DIARY

August 23 (they only been gone about half a week now)

SO MAYBE this is a bit fucked up, but I’m gonna put it down on paper in black and white, and maybe when I read it back to myself, it’ll seem more normal.

Here’s the thing. Like Casey says, us three is a throuple. Three dudes in love. Whatever. Cuz I sure as shit love them guys, and nothin’s gonna change that. So, yeah. There’s two dudes in place A and one dude, alone, in place B. I just figured them two would be gettin’ busy in bed in their fancy dorm room whenever they had a chance—cuz that’s what guys do, right?

Well, apparently not so much. Last night they Skyped me. There them two were, sittin’ all cozy on Casey’s rainbow-colored bedspread. The floppy stuffed unicorn that me and Zander gave him for Christmas junior year was propped up behind ’em, starin’ at the computer, like it was lookin’ right at yours truly. I felt real alone and a little like a loser (fucked-up fact is they only been gone a couple days), but I leaned back on my bed and acted like I didn’t give a shit.

Casey said, in this adorable proper voice, “Nate, there’s a topic Zander and I feel it’s imperative we discuss. It’s a matter of great importance.” He already sounds like a doctor, and he’s only a freshman in college.

Zander was just starin’ into the computer at me, sorta studyin’ my I-don’t-give-a-shit-about-nothin’ expression.

“What’s such a big friggin’ deal, babe? Lay it on me.” That was pretty cool soundin’, I thought.

“Well, Zander and I want to have a discussion about.... Nate, we want to discuss physical intimacy. In that....”

Even on Skype I could see that two spots on Casey’s cheeks had turned bright pink. Looked like he was having trouble spittin’ this out. And he was the talker in our throuple.

“Zander and I are here together, without you, and we’ve talked about this—”

“I expect you two’ve been goin’ to town on each other every night since you got to college and are prob’ly itchin’ to strip each other down right now.” Both of my guys’ eyes popped open wide when I said that.

“Actually, Nate.” Zander spoke up cuz it seemed that Casey was suddenly at a loss for words. “We haven’t, and we’re not gonna.”

“Huh?” That just kinda flew outta my mouth. “Come again, guy?”

Casey found his voice. “We aren’t going to sleep together unless you’re with us. We discussed it, and neither of us think it would feel right.” He glanced at Zander, and them two nodded at each other. “We aren’t going to do anything in bed together until you’re here for a visit.”

Excerpt:

Patrick rounded the corner fast, almost too fast. He barely kept his balance, groaning when his left knee twisted, reminding him that his ability to outrun anyone or anything had taken a turn for the worse. If that damn thing he'd only snatched a brief glimpse of got him, he'd be mauled and killed.

The huge, nightmarish thing panted as it chased after him, gusts of his surprisingly clean-smelling breath wafting to him. As Patrick raced through the deserted streets—because who the hell took a shortcut at this time of the night—he searched for a hiding spot. A fire ladder would work too, or whatever. Anything really, so he could put a safe distance between himself and the grotesque creature. He could have avoided all of this but, damn him, he'd indulged in his human body's desire for junk food. Next time he was going to order his food in—if he lived long enough.

Patrick's lungs burned, and his leg muscles screamed bloody murder at him. Fuck the universe for rendering him incapable of flying. He’d been trapped in this human body for twenty-three years already, and no one would ever think he'd once been strong and—best not to go there. Nothing good ever came of his memories.

Patrick stumbled, and a hot gust of air tickled his neck. He plunged face forward to the ground, all air rushing out in one short pained gasp. Reflexively he put his hands behind his head to protect his vulnerable neck.

The freaking thing growled and yanked at the bag containing Patrick's junk food. Patrick yelped when the bag tore open, spilling its contents all over.

Curled up on the ground, Patrick peeked over his shoulder when a chuckle drew his attention. Someone hunkered down next to him before gentle fingers pried the last string of the bag from his hand. Patrick gritted his teeth, wishing he was in possession of his power instead of lying there, almost whimpering in fear.

“Don't worry, he's not malicious. He just wants your fries,” a soft, melodious voice informed him. The fries-loving beast growled, sending goose bumps up Patrick's spine. The voice added, “Right. He wants your fries and your ketchup. You see, the ketchup is majorly important.”

The person who'd spoken to him withdrew, and the creature's paws clicked on the ground as it followed the voice. Whoever it was rustled the wraps of his food and talked soothingly to the yipping beast. Carefully and slowly, Patrick turned on his side to take a look. His heart thumped painfully hard against his ribcage, almost causing it to burst.

In the corner of the badly lit alley crouched something that seemed to be a mix between a large dog and a wolf, but the size of a pony. That wasn't even the strangest characteristic of the beast. No, the strangest characteristic was the dark brown, folded wings on the beast's back. That couldn't be!

Patrick's gaze traveled to the hands that dumped his fries on the torn bag, generously spreading ketchup all over them. The beast licked the hand in a grateful gesture before it dug into the food.

Patrick's breath caught when he observed the naked man who knelt next to the creature. The man's face was beautiful, no doubt about that. Patrick's gaze slid along a slender throat, finely toned shoulders, and a slight frame. A white, feathery wing covered the man's crotch.

An angel.

Review

Where do I start to review this unique book? What do you know about hellhounds? I think we've all heard of the massive size and glowing red eyes, but a passion for fast food? And since when did they hang around with angels?

Then there's the angel. Beautiful; check. Snowy white wings: check. Calm and benevolent - er, well not exactly.

Angel considers himself to have saved Patrick from the hellhound, and therefore entitled to a reward. Patrick wasn't prepared to give him what he asked for. How dare he! No one walks away from and angel! Ooh what a brat that angel is. He just can't take no for an answer! There was a 'love stick' with his name on it and he was going to get some action 'or else'.

At first, Patrick wanted nothing to do with the angel, or his dog, but then things took an unexpected turn and events that started twenty three years earlier came to a head - with a bang, so to speak.

Oh, and the cat and the hellhound are in love, and there's a pregnant angel with the potential to heal the rift between angels and demons, and it all ends with four friends facing the combined wrath of the demon council and the angelic council.

The thing that struck me most, after the obvious humour, was the depth of the characterization. All four of the main characters, as surreal and unreal as they might be at times, had a solid feel to them. I could practically see the pouty expression on the angel's face, the dopey grin of the panting hellhound, and even the disapproving look of the cat.

There are rough edges, and sometimes the grammar slips, but who cares when he story is this good? I was totally spellbound, and raced through to the end. It certainly didn't take the direction I expected, and there were some real OMG moments in there.

This book is full of the unexpected. If you like your stories predictable don't bother, but if you like quirky, imaginative and easy to read, this is a must.
