Casey Scott grew up being told he’d never amount to
anything, and despite the unwavering love and support from his best friend, Jake, the idea sticks
in the back of Casey’s mind. When he discovers he has a unique destiny in an enclave where
shifters and humans live together, he seizes the chance, wanting for once in his life to be
someone special.
Tsvetok Yerokhin lost his parents to the evil ruler of the
enclave when he was a boy. The responsibilities of raising his two younger brothers nearly
overwhelmed him and self-doubt took over. When the new Alpha and his Protector arrive in
time to save his life, Sev is grateful,
but he’s even more shocked when he scents his mate with
them.
Casey isn’t prepared for the feelings that sweep over him
when he meets Sev, but he refuses to
act on them because he’s straight. Still, there is something
so alluring about Sev that Casey can’t
help being drawn to him.
As the two explore the edges of their new discovery, an evil
returns, determined to control the
enclave or destroy it. The Alpha and Protector are powerless
to stop it, but Casey holds the key
to victory. If he can discover what it is, he has a chance
to save them all. To be the hero.
Unfortunately, the hero has to be willing to make the
ultimate sacrifice, and for Casey that
means losing his heart.
Interview
Let’s start by telling us, in twenty words, or less, what you’re book’s about.
Casey meets Sev, and finds out they’re mates. But something out there will tear them apart, if it can.
What was it that led you to write in the genre(s) you write?
I like to write. I don’t really look at genres much, because to me a story is a story. I write shifters, lovers, killers….oh wait, that’s the next book. :)
Are your books character led or plot led, or both?
A bit of both, I think.
What is your favourite part of the writing process?
Building the world from the ground up. Making the rules that all characters must live by. PLAYING GOD!!!!! Er, I mean….it’s fun.
What is your least favourite part of the writing process
Ugh. Edits. Ugh. I know it makes the story better, but…yeah, no.
Where do you get your inspiration for your characters?
I cultivate bits and pieces of personalities from people I know, as well as infusing them with a little of myself.
Tell us a little about the characters in your book and their story. You can use more than twenty words this time
Casey Scott was raised by his friend Jake’s guardians, mostly. His own parents had no time for him, and it hurt him. As it came time to go to college, Casey wanted to go somewhere no one knew him. He wouldn’t be Jake’s friend, he would be Casey. But then Casey’s parents said they would pay for his schooling if he went to the same college as Jake. Casey’s parents told him in no uncertain terms that was what he would do. While they were in school, Jake learned his destiny and how it intertwined with Zak’s. Then, much to Casey’s surprise, he found out that HIS destiny would also take him to the same spot in the Tongass Forest of Alaska. In Scent of the Heart, Casey finds out what his destiny is, and Sev’s part in it.
Sev lived in the enclave, which was ruled by a cruel and sadistic man named Elizar. Elizar killed Sev’s parents, and banished Sev and his brothers to the outer ring of the enclave, which was reserved for criminals or anyone Elizar deemed unworthy. While there, he attempted to steal a bit of food to feed his siblings, and he was caught. The men began to beat him, just as Zak, Jake, and Casey arrived. It was at that moment that Sev knew the truth, his mate was there with him.
If you could have one wish what would it be?
That people would just learn to get along.
What's your deepest fear?
Failing people I care about.
If I came to dinner what would you feed me?
We’d take you out to a local place for vegan pizza. :)
Which of your characters would you like to be sharing the dinner table with us?
Benny Peters from Pitch. He loves Classic Slice’s vegan pizza.
Tell us in the character’s own words, what he/she would have to say about you.
Casey: He’s cruel and sadistic. He gives me love, in the most unexpected form, and then he rips it away from me. Who does things like that? I bet he pulled the wings off flies when he was a kid, too.
What would they say (again in their own words) about themselves, and their story that will make us want to read about it?
Sev: Our story is one of growth, both personal and community. Of coming together, even when the odds say it’s a lost cause. It’s about being ready to lose everything, as long as everyone you love is safe.
Which other fictional character(s) would you like to be present at the dinner party?
Laura Harner’s Ryan and Cliff (Cliff’s Edge), Havan Fellows’s Wick and Ned (Wicked Ways), Ben and Scott (Someone to Keep Me by me and KC Wells), Colt (from Cate Ashwood’s ‘Keeping Sweets’ and his own upcoming book!), Marcus and Ben (City Knight by Tom Webb). Hell, by the time I finish this list, we’ll have a small city to feed.
What other authors would you say have either influenced your writing or you would like to emulate?
The Pulp Friction group has influenced my writing, but I don’t want to emulate anyone. I like being unique.
Which character from literature, would you most like to have invented?
Sam Gribley from My Side of the Mountain and Billy Sive from The Front Runner.
What do you prefer writing. A one off novel, a series or short stories?
I like a variety. 500 Miles was a novella, Pitch and Wet Pain were novels, as were the two books I’ve done with KC Wells, Protector of the Alpha and Scent of the Heart are novels. Mr. Average, Storming Love: Bear and Travis are both novellas. And the Pulp Friction books are novellas that are serialized.
What kind of books do you read (if you have time to read)?
I have very little time to read lately, but I love to read shifter stories. I’ve drifted away from angsty stories, to something a little less heavy. I just finished reading When Will I See You Again by Julie Lynn Hayes and absolutely loved it.
Where do you see yourself personally and professionally in 5 years time?
Well, hopefully my husband won’t have killed me by then, and I’ll still be writing.
Do you have any other projects in the offing we should look out for?
I’m nearly done with a book tentatively titled ‘Haven’, which is a huge departure for me. It’s dark and violent, and Haven is a very bad good man.

Excerpt:
“This night is shot,” Casey mumbled.
“Hakii, if you’re there, I’m sorry. I need to find him. I’ll try to be back as
soon as I can. Oh, and if you’re not there, I hope you’re getting a damn good
laugh at me talking to myself.”
The night air had chilled considerably.
Casey threw on a sweater and hurried to the Alpha’s house. Before he could
pound on the door, it swung open. Jake stood there wearing nothing at all.
“Oh god, my eyes.”
Jake sighed. “You’ve seen me before. A
lot, if I recall correctly.”
“And every time I do, I remember that I
need to create eye bleach.”
Jake faked a laugh. “Yeah, you’re
hilarious. What do you want?”
“A guy came to my house tonight. His
name is Sev, and I think he’s in trouble.”
All humor fled from Jake’s face. “What
happened?”
Casey told him about the visit.
“He…called me his mate. What the hell is that about?”
“Later. We’ve got to find him.”
In an instant, Jake transformed into a
beautiful black jaguar. Zak came rushing to the door. “What is wrong?”
Before Casey could answer, Zak grabbed
a heavy coat and squirmed into it. “Jake will track him. You will come with
us.”
“Zak, he called me his mate. Why would
he do that?”
“You worry about this now? I do not see
where this matters. If you prefer, you may stay behind.”
Casey sobered immediately. “No, you’re
right. I’m sorry.”
They tracked Jake as he hurried to the woods.
When they heard him roar, Zak and Casey ran to the edge of the forest. Jake had
transformed back to his human form and, man, was he pissed.
“Come out here, now,” he demanded.
There was no movement, but Casey heard
a clicking noise, followed by the familiar stamping of feet.
“You spray me and I swear to the gods I
will neuter you. Put your damn tail down and face us as a man, Sev.”
